Privacy & Data Protection Policy

Your Daily Qur’an Reader

Last updated: 11 September 2026

1. About this policy

This policy explains how Dawam handles information when you use the app. It is written for Dawam — Your Daily Qur’an Reader — and does not replace Harbour Apps' general website privacy information.

Dawam is designed to work substantially offline. Most of the information created as you use the app stays on your device and is not uploaded to a Dawam account or a Harbour Apps cloud profile.

2. Who is responsible for your information

Harbour Apps is responsible for the personal information described in this policy where that information is received or controlled by Harbour Apps. For privacy questions or requests about that information, contact hello@harbourapps.co.uk.

Dawam does not provide account registration, sign-in, email collection or a personal profile. Harbour Apps cannot view, retrieve or manage your on-device reading information unless you choose to send it to us, for example in a support enquiry or by sharing a backup yourself.

3. Information Dawam processes

Dawam processes information needed to provide the features you choose. This can include reading and learning activity, app settings, locally scheduled reminders, optional downloads and, if you open the Qibla Compass, your device location.

This is not the same as Harbour Apps collecting the information. The app's reading and learning records are stored locally; the limited information that leaves the device is described below.

4. Information stored locally on your device

The app uses an on-device database and app storage. Depending on the features you use, it can store:

  • your last reading position, pages marked complete, reading journey and completion dates;
  • daily reading targets, assigned pages and carry-over progress;
  • bookmarks, including any names you give them;
  • reader choices, such as translations, presentation and display settings;
  • Learn and memorisation progress, including practice, recall and review information;
  • selected reciters, details of installed audio packs and other app or widget preferences; and
  • downloaded recitations, optional content files and a cached content catalogue where those features are available.

This data is used to make the app work for you on that device. The source code does not include a Dawam account, cloud sync service or app backend that receives these records.

5. Daily reading, bookmarks and Learn information

Your daily target, reading history, bookmarks and Learn or memorisation records are held locally so Dawam can show progress, resume reading and plan reviews. They are not sent to Harbour Apps by these features.

A bookmark name or a user-created learning selection may be personal to you. Please treat exported backups with care, because they can contain this local app information.

6. Notifications and reminders

Dawam can schedule an optional daily reading reminder at the time you select. This is a local notification scheduled on your device. It does not use a Harbour Apps account, remote push-notification service or notification profile.

On Android, Dawam may ask for notification permission when you enable reminders. You can turn reminders off in Dawam or manage notification access through your device settings.

7. Location and the Qibla Compass

If you open the Qibla Compass, Dawam asks for Android location permission to calculate a Qibla bearing. The app declares both precise and approximate location permissions, and can use approximate location if that is what you allow. Location is requested only when the Compass screen is opened, used in the calculation on the device, and is not requested in the background.

The audited app code does not store or transmit your latitude or longitude. You can decline location permission; the Compass will then be unable to calculate a location-based bearing.

8. Internet access and downloadable content

Dawam's core Qur’an content is bundled for offline use. An internet connection is needed only for optional online features available in your version of the app, such as downloading recitation packs, refreshing their catalogue, or downloading an optional Mushaf/content pack.

Those requests are ordinary HTTPS GET requests to the configured Harbour Apps content hosts, including harbourapps.co.uk. The app code does not attach a Dawam account, email address, advertising identifier or a user profile to those requests.

As with any internet request, the server and network providers may process technical information needed to deliver it, such as your IP address, the requested file, request time and network/device protocol information. Downloaded files remain in the app's local storage for offline use unless you delete them.

9. Audio and recitation downloads

Where audio downloads are enabled in your app version and you choose to use them, Dawam retrieves a catalogue and recitation packs from the Harbour Apps audio content host over HTTPS. It downloads and stores the packs locally so they can be played offline.

The app does not stream your listening activity to Harbour Apps and the download code contains no account credentials or user-entered identifier. The availability of audio can vary by build and by content availability.

10. Backups, export and import

Dawam lets you create and restore local backup files. On Android, a completed backup is saved to the user-visible Download/Dawam/Backups area and can be shared using your device's share sheet. Dawam does not upload backups to a Harbour Apps server.

Backup files contain local app state, such as settings, reading positions, bookmarks, progress and learning records. They are plain-text JSON backup files with an integrity checksum; the checksum checks for accidental damage and is not encryption. If you share or upload a backup, the service or person you choose will handle it under its own terms and privacy policy.

Android/device backups. Depending on your Android version, device settings and backup provider, your device may separately back up some Dawam app data as part of its operating-system backup service. Harbour Apps does not operate or control that backup service. You can manage device backups through your Android or account settings.

11. Third-party services, analytics and advertising

The audited Dawam source contains no Firebase, Firebase Analytics, Firebase Crashlytics, Google Analytics, Supabase, user-authentication, advertising SDK, behavioural advertising SDK or other telemetry/crash-reporting SDK.

Dawam does not display advertising and does not use an advertising identifier for behavioural advertising. It uses Android operating-system services for features such as permissions, local notifications, location access, media playback and the system share sheet.

Links you choose to open from the app, such as content attribution links, open with the relevant external service and are governed by that service's own privacy information.

12. How information is used and shared

On-device information is used to provide the reading, learning, reminder, widget, playback and backup features you choose. Harbour Apps does not sell your information or share your local reading activity, bookmarks or memorisation progress with advertisers.

Information may leave the device only when it is necessary for an optional request you make, such as a content download; when you open an external link; when you use your device's share feature; or where required by law. We do not have an app backend receiving your local records to share with other users or organisations.

13. Lawful basis and international transfers

Where Harbour Apps processes technical server information generated when you request a download, our lawful basis is our legitimate interests in providing, maintaining and securing Dawam's online content services.

Where you contact Harbour Apps directly, we process the information you provide in order to respond to your enquiry or request.

Most app information stays local and is not processed by Harbour Apps. Internet traffic and hosting infrastructure can involve processing outside the UK. The app source identifies Harbour Apps content hosts but does not identify a separate hosting provider or a fixed processing location, so this policy does not make a claim about a particular transfer mechanism.

14. Retention, deletion and security

Local app data remains on your device until you change or reset it, clear the app's storage, delete the relevant downloads or uninstall the app. You can delete downloaded recitations in the app. Backup files remain in the location where you saved them until you delete them, and you should also remove any copies you have shared or uploaded where appropriate.

Dawam reduces the amount of information sent off-device by keeping core reading information local. The app uses HTTPS for its configured optional content downloads. No digital storage or transmission method is completely secure, and the source does not support a claim that local databases or backup files are encrypted.

15. Children’s privacy

Dawam does not require users to create an account or provide their name, email address, date of birth or other personal profile information.

Dawam is not designed to profile children, serve advertising or use children's information for marketing. Most reading and learning information remains locally on the device.

If you believe a child has sent personal information to Harbour Apps through a support contact, please contact us so that we can review the matter.

16. Your rights and complaints

UK data-protection law may give you rights to ask for access, correction, erasure, restriction, objection or portability in relation to personal data Harbour Apps actually processes. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

Because Dawam's reading, bookmark, progress and learning records normally remain only on your device, Harbour Apps cannot access, correct, export or delete them for you. You can manage that information in the app, through app/device storage controls, or through your own local backup files.

17. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy if Dawam's features, data practices or legal requirements change. The current version will always be published on this page.

Material changes affecting how personal information is handled will be reflected in this policy before or when the relevant change takes effect.
